7 Home Painting Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner!
1) Cover Your Floors With Cardboard
Let’s face it, paint splashes, drips, and gets spilled. Accidents happen. That’s why you should always lay something down to protect your floors. But, instead of using newspaper, plastic, or sheets, use cardboard instead. Cardboard protects the floor just as well but doesn’t move or present a tripping hazard.
2) Heat Painters Tape Before Removing
Painters tape is handy for a lot of things. But what it’s not known for is coming off without ripping or, even worse, peeling some freshly dried paint off with it. To get painter’s tape to come off cleaner and easier, heat it up for a few moments with a hair dryer.
3) Prevent A Brush From Drying With A Rubber Glove
While waiting for your first coat to dry, you may not want to wash off the brush, which is okay if the paint stays wet. To keep the paint from drying on the brush, wrap it in a rubber glove and seal it with a rubber band. Store in the freezer if you’re waiting more than a couple of hours.
4) Apply Thicker Coats
It may seem better to apply thin coats of paint at a time to prevent dripping or patchy brushwork. But it’s actually better to spread a thick coat around than to redo a thin coat.
5) Line The Paint Tray With Foil
One of the worst things about home painting is the cleanup afterward. Have one less thing to wash out when you’re done by lining your painting tray with tin foil. After you’re done painting, all you have to do is fold up the foil and toss it in the recycling. Easy as pie!
6) Keep Brushes Soft With Fabric Softener
One of the most important factors in a pristine home painting job is the quality of your brushes. Hard, clumping brushes can’t possibly get the same results as soft, clean brushes. Keep your paint brushes at their best by soaking the bristles in fabric softener after each wash.
7) Store Brushes In The Freezer
After you’re done painting, and everything’s been cleaned, store your brushes in the freezer to keep them from drying out. It’s also helpful to wrap them in paper, so the bristles don’t bend or curl.
