How To Properly Clean Your Walls Before Painting

Your walls are in dire need of painting, but you don’t have the time to do all the prep. Do you really need to clean your walls before painting?

Not cleaning your walls before painting is a huge mistake. Of course, if you’re not a professional painter, there’s no way you could know that. And that’s why it gets overlooked so frequently. But that doesn’t make it any less important.

Cleaning interior walls before painting aren’t like outside, where you can pressure wash the grime away. It takes a little more patience and finesse. Keep reading to learn more about properly washing your walls.

Do You Have To Clean Your Walls Before Painting?

Washing your walls is a crucial step in preparing your walls to paint. Every step of prep work ensures that when the paint dries, it looks perfect and stays that way. And that’s not just our opinion. Even the manufacturers recommend painting on a clean wall.

Now, if you’re a clean freak (no judgment), and already give your walls a good wipe-down every week, and they don’t need to be sanded or repaired, you can probably get away with skipping it.

Why You Should Clean Your Walls

Over time, dust and dirt cling to walls, and humidity makes it all stick, creating a film over your paint. If you're a part of the majority that does not wash your walls often, everything begins to layer. It’s gross to think about, we know. But that’s why we’re telling you.

If you don’t clean your walls before painting, it will drastically affect how the paint goes on, gumming up or leaving clumps across your wall. The paint may also be discolored, especially light colors. And lastly, the paint won’t last nearly as long.

What To Do Before Cleaning Your Walls

Make sure to do all the prep work before cleaning your walls. That means getting rid of all the old paint you can with a scraper and patching up any pinholes or cracks. And last but not least, you’ll need to properly sand down the whole wall until it’s as satin-smooth.

How To Clean Your Walls Before Painting

First, you’ll need to grab a bucket full of warm, soapy water and a sponge. It’s also a good idea to lay a sheet or towel on the floor in case of splashes, spills, etc.

Wipe each wall thoroughly to remove all dirt and dust. Be sure not to totally soak the wall, as that can compromise the integrity of your drywall. When the wall is clean, towel it dry and use a fan to air dry the rest. Make sure the wall is completely dry before painting.
